Monash Kills http://www.monashkills.org/site Monash University conducts live dissections in their classrooms Fri, 05 Jun 2009 03:47:21 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.5 en Victory! The Monash Rabbits have been saved http://www.monashkills.org/site/victory-the-monash-rabbits-have-been-saved/ http://www.monashkills.org/site/victory-the-monash-rabbits-have-been-saved/#comments Thu, 04 Jun 2009 03:09:01 +0000 noah http://www.monashkills.org/site/?p=33 We are overjoyed to announce that Monash University have confirmed that the live rabbit dissections are not taking place this year. The classes have been replaced with a humane non animal alternative.

Thank you so much to everyone who sent in objections, took part in protests, or contributed to the campaign in any way. This huge victory for the rabbits could not have been achieved without you!

However, the campaign is not over yet. Monash University are refusing to stop ALL live animal dissections.

This means that there is nothing to stop the university resuming these experiments again in a few years, or using other animals in similar experiments. Monash has even indicated that there are other live animal experiments planned for this year.

Until we can get a guarantee from Monash that they are putting an end to ALL live animal experiments in the classroom, the campaign will continue. Please sign up to our e-mail list (or facebook and myspace pages) to receive the latest information about what you can do to stop live animal dissections at Monash University.

Over 100 activists and supporters protested outside the National Gallery of Victoria where the Monash University 50th anniversary Gala Dinner was held.

Holding an array of banners, signs and posters, the protesters disrupted the proceedings with whistles, megaphones and a very loud gong!

People attending the dinner were handed leaflets and DVDs featuring undercover footage obtained from the completely unnecessary experiments conducted upon rabbits as part of Physiology class 3171.

Please voice your opposition to this cruel waste of life by sending a pre-written objection email to Monash University.

Monash University continues to educate it’s students by performing classroom dissections on living rabbits.

On the 18 March 2008 Monash Kills campaigners occupied the physiology building to stage a protest against this barbaric and completely unnecessary practice.

Hundreds of DVDs were distributed to the students, containing undercover footage of the rabbits being experimented upon in Physiology Class 3171.

Most students were shocked to learn that live animal experiments were being performed on their campus, and were generally very supportive, wanting to know more about the issues involved.

Monash Kills campaigners took under-cover footage of experiments on living rabbits as part of an undergraduate physiology class. The students were given the option of watching a video instead. At the end of the class, while most students left to get a snack, the rabbits were given an overdose and thrown in a rubbish bin. These experiments must stop.
